Description
Mimi is the story of three generations of bastard children. Even though each generation attempts to break, what appears to be a curse, the situation of fatherlessness, continues to be a crisis. Big Momma the primary bastard, is not only fatherless she is also motherless. Through lack of both paternal and maternal love, she beds the man who produces, Latoya. Big Momma thinks Joe Johnson will be the love of her life; it turns out, all he has are sexual relations in mind. Big Momma finds out the hard way that she was simply a night of lust for him. Big Momma's daughter, Latoya, is totally opposite of Big Momma. Where Big Momma is proud, loud, and dangerous, Latoya is bashful, shameful, and needy. Latoya's bastard child comes from the need to be accepted. Being that most town folks look down on her, and treat her as a bastard, she takes men into her bosom, in order feel like she belongs. Latoya thinks of their passion as love. It is not until she finds herself with child that she realizes that the love she was searching for was not love; it was simply men who taking advantage of her ignorance. Mimi, on the other hand, is nothing like her grandmother or her mother. Her definition of love is money. What people think about her bastard situation is their problem. She employs sex to get back at any and everybody who attempts to define her. Mimi creates her own reputation, she enjoys giving the towns folks something to talk about. Mimi controls the situation. She uses her sexiness to get what she feels is deserved to her. Mimi flirts openly, with everybody in town, from the preacher to the deacons and dares anybody to call her on it. Her actions are the payback to everyone in town for chasing the only person she ever loved away, her momma. It is not until all three get what they consider to be true love that they find out the love they were searching for was not what they thought they wanted, but what they already had. Their relationships have to come full circle before Mimi can be saved.
