Evelyn N. Alfred — Poet in the City

Not that anyone knows this, but I, Derrick Young, am a closet poet.  I’ve been writing poems about love, life, and revolution for 10 plus years.  At one point my goal was to publish a book that I wanted to call “Life, Love, & Liberty.” It was to be a collection of essays and poems that would, of course, change the consciousness of every person that read it.  However, what ultimately became of it was a place for me to reflect and better learn who & whom I was.  I am forever thankful for what writing those words did for me.

I’m not as active with my writing now-a-days, but I remain a steadfast believer in words.  Their power to build, destroy, heal, and inspire allows poets to push the boundaries of understanding and imagination with a few well placed words.  Hopefully creating timeless works that comfort, challenge, grow, & mature with the reader over time.  This is why we’ve developed the “Poet in the City” position.   A resident poet post created to  feature promising young writers that are working to develop and mature as a wordsmith.

Our “Poet in the City” will be responsible for keeping a finger on the pulse of their area’s poetry scene.  Interviewing both amateur and established poets, reviewing different Open Mic sets, as well as, new and classic poetry books.  However, what is most important is following their growth and development to become a published poet.  They will share their work, share their struggles, & share their successes.

So with that…we are excited to introduce to you our first ever MahoganyBooks “Poet in the City,” Evelyn N. Alfred.  She is a person with a voice and passion for words.  We hope you will come to enjoy her and cheer her forward as she maneuvers the up-and-downs of writing and publishing her first book.

Exactly where and how Evelyns’ journey will end, no one knows…but I am excited to have her share her experience with us.
