This book examines the experiences of African American women in interracial intimacy. What motivates them? How do they navigate the unfamiliar terrain in intimacy? To what extent do claims about a new improved era in race relations account for Black women’s contemporary involvement in intimate interracial relationships? Whether Black men’s “unavailability” accounts at least in part for Black women’s increasing rates of involvement in interracial relationships is also considered.
By reading verbatim accounts of a series of interviews with a wide range of Black women who are currently involved in intimate interracial relationships, the reader is challenged to consider the way that contemporary race relations simultaneously result from and perpetuate longstanding stereotypes about race and sex. Ultimately, the book contributes to the literature and scholarship focusing on one of the most underrepresented categories of people in American society –African American women.
