Books for the Block:
A Community Wide Book Drive to Provide Thousands of Books to DC Area Youth
Washington DC, June 11, 2010—MahoganyBooks announced today that they are launching an area wide book drive campaign which will run from June through August 7th, to benefit Washington DC youth. In an effort to increase both access to literature and the love of books, residents of the metropolitan region are urged to clean off their shelves and donate new and gently used children’s books at various collection sites throughout the area.
Residents are encouraged to donate books from certain categories such as: fiction, board books, educational workbooks, biography, science, math, and art. For supporters unable to drop off books at the area sites, they can simply log on to www.mahoganybooks.com and click on Books for the Block for more details to donate online.
Current Drop off Sites (more to be announced):
Howard University Bookstore
2225 Georgia Ave. NW
Washington, DC 20059
Bloombars (in historic Columbia Heights)
3222 11th Street NW
Washington, DC 20010
Beginning July 24, the largest distribution of books will be conducted at the family friendly Capital Hip Hop Soul Fest, where area youth are encouraged to come out and choose their very own book to take home with them. At the event, popular authors such as publishing powerhouse Jessica Tilles will also be onsite to autograph their books and meet the community. On Wednesday, July 14, from 11-1pm, a special drive-by drop off in front of Howard University Bookstore located at 2225 Georgia Ave. NW in DC, will afford supporters the convenience of driving up and dropping off books without ever leaving their cars! Co-sponsors of Books for the Block include DJ EZ Street in conjunction with 93.9 WKYS radio station, Bloombars, Howard University Bookstore and the Capital Hip Hop Soul Fest. By partnering with area organizations that provide literacy programs to residents such as the Oxon Hill Public Library, Marshall Heights Community Development Center, and others, the books will be put into very deserving hands.
“We are excited to promote literacy in our community,” says Derrick Young, CEO of MahoganyBooks. “Our vision is to be a leader in the community, by promoting reading, writing, and knowledge of self as a fundamental way to enrich the life of every individual. This book drive allows us to realize part of that vision.”
